Winery and Vineyard Summer 2008

New Releases

Summer is winding down and harvest is near. With the changing of season, we have three new wines to pair either with that prime cut of meat on the grill or to sip in the shade of the veranda.

Meet the latest additions to our Sea Turtle family of wines:

Malbec Bin 7, Viognier Bin 7 and Chardonnay Bin 7

These are big, strong American wines that show the pure expression of the fruit and the classic varietal character.

The Malbec is a bold, and shows excellent young aromas of charcoal, black pepper and blackberry. This wine has the subtlety of Merlot combined with the energy of Cabernet Sauvignon. Malbec was once just a blending grape and now with the help of Argentina is an old varietal getting a new fresh look and taste from wine lovers. This wine was aged in Missouri oak barrels from AK Cooperage.

The Viognier is a bold white wine that provides a new profile for Chardonnay drinkers. It was really fun this last year introducing this grape to some folks who had not discovered Viognier. This wine is floral with a spicy aroma, with a rich flavor that had a touch of honey from start to finish. Not sweet at all, but that great nectar flavor. I love to pair the Viognier with tilapia, one of the most highly consumed fish in America and a fish that has small amounts of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

The Chardonnay Bin 7 was barrel aged surlies in which the wine was kept in contact with the dead yeast cells and other sedimentary matter that remain when the fermentation is completed. In the last decade, this practice has become fairly commonplace in the making of Chardonnay and is followed also on occasion for Sauvignon Blanc. The wine is very complex and has the toasty, roasted grain character yeast that remained in contact with the wine. We stirred the wine every two weeks in the barrel and complexity is outstanding.

Come taste these new wines this Thursday August 28th at Cellar Rat located at 1701 Baltimore I Kansas City, MO I 816.221.9463. The free tasting is from 5:30 to 7:30pm. These wines are now available at the winery tasting room on Fridays from 4pm to 7pm.

Vineyard News:

The harvest at Amigoni Vineyards is near. With about 3-4 tons of Dijon clone Chardonnay currently at 19.5 brix, we are targeting first or second week in September for harvest. After last year's devastating Easter freeze that wiped out all white grapes, this year looks like a bumper crop. A few new grape varieties are also now old enough to produce small amounts of wine: Mourvedre, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These grapes will provide either a single barrel or used for blending with Cab Franc. Our total reds hanging in the vineyard is approximately 4 tons. Most of our new oak cooperage will be supplied by AK Cooperage in Higbee, MO. These barrels are the same barrels used by Silver Oak in Napa.
